Being a member of a real team at work is kind of a social victory.
A good team will provide a sense of belonging and a mutual goal to work toward, no matter if you’re building a house or working as a customer service representative. Even though you’re already a pretty awesome team member, there are always ways you can step-up your game
You’re Good, But You Can Be Better
Being a member of a team, like our Answering Service Care team, is sort of like being a member of a family, there are things you know you’re expected to do and then there are things that you may not realize that you should do in order to really show your commitment. Sure, sometimes a job is just a job, but if that’s the case, you’d not be interested in becoming a better team member.
You’re “in it to win it,” so take these friendly notes to heart:
- Always do what you say you will. Follow-through is probably the most important thing you can do to cement your relationship in a team. If no one can count on you, then slowly you’re going to just be that person on the team that no one asks for anything important and eventually gets moved to the mailroom out of pity. You don’t want the pity mailroom job.
Follow-through, and if something happens (life does get in the way sometimes), let your teammates know as soon as possible so someone who is available can step in to take your place.
- Own your mistakes, big and small. Everybody makes mistakes, but it’s how you deal with them that determines how you’ll be as a team member. Do you try to hide them or make excuses? Or do you take a deep breath and just admit that you did something wrong and ask for help on handling that same situation in the future? Owning that mistake is endearing, hiding it can be dangerous.
- Always help carry the load. You might feel like you’re carrying a lot right now, but there’s going to be a time when the person who isn’t pulling their weight will carry a load you can’t bear. That’s how a team works. It’s all give and take. Today I’ll carry you, tomorrow you carry me. Keep in mind that the ultimate goal is the ultimate goal, and there’s no set amount of time that any one team member has to commit to the effort.
- Don’t be afraid to speak up. Whether your concern is about how much of the load you’re carrying or some kind of procedural issue, speak up. Don’t let your concerns fester in the dark, otherwise they’ll just grow and grow until you can’t be honest with anyone on your team. Open, honest communication means a lot in a team environment, say what’s on your mind.
When you work as a part of a team, you’ll not only make some great friends, you’ll learn valuable skills that you can implement in other parts of your life. Working as a team is a good way to help spread out the stress and frustration of a high stress career, too, since there’s always someone nearby who understands what you’re going through.
